June 15, 2022
The U.S. government has designated May as the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.
On May 24, 2022, the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) hosted a Fireside Chat to commemorate AANHPI Heritage Month. They invited Dr. Roli Varma, professor at the University of New Mexico School of Public Administration, to participate in the panel with Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan, the 15th Director of the NSF. Dr. Varma was also invited to be NSF’s AANHPI Heritage Month Research Spotlight to further discuss herself and her work as a researcher in the AANHPI community.
Obtaining her Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Science and Technology Studies, Dr. Varma has received multiple grants from NSF. Her research interests include science and technology policy; Asian Indian immigrants in the U.S. science and engineering workforce; return migration of Asian Indian scientists and engineers from the U.S.; women and minorities in information technology education; management of industrial R&D in the U.S.; and professional ethics and responsibilities.
