UNM SPA Hosts Visiting Scholar from Beijing, China

The University of New Mexico School of Public Administration (SPA) is creating opportunities for students to learn about Beijing, China from a first-hand source.
Jianguo Chen, Associate Professor in Public Administration at North China Electric Power University, will be at UNM as a visiting scholar through Dec. 2018.
“As our second visiting scholar from China, we are thrilled to have Dr. Chen join us for the year,” said SPA Director Bruce J. Perlman. “Through Dr. Chen’s visit, the School of Public Administration hopes to continue and further foster our rewarding relationship with Chinese Universities.”
Chen earned his Ph.D. in Public Administration from the Renmin University of China in 2008. At his university, he teaches courses in public management, the political institution of contemporary China and residential community governance. His research interests include self-governance in urban neighborhoods and the relationship between government and Non-Government Organizations, while his work primarily focuses on the effect of property structure on residential community governance in urban China. He has also conducted studies of homeowners’ choices and self-governance in an urban neighborhood in Beijing.
He says the people are part of what draws him to UNM.
“There are a number of outstanding scholars, similar to my professional and research interests here,” he said. “I expect to carry out fruitful research in two aspects, such as urban neighborhood governance and government and social relations. I also hope to establish a strong cooperative relationship between my university, North China Electric Power University, and the School of Public Administration at The University of New Mexico.”
