Endowments

The University of New Mexico Alumni Association offers the Anne J. Brown MPA Graduate Scholarship to assist MPA graduate students and is made possible through gifts from alumni, friends, and chapters. The scholarship award ranges from $250 – $750 a semester and up to $1,500 a year; however, amounts may change annually.  Applications are available online.

Criteria

  • Must be enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration (MPA) Graduate Program at UNM SPA.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 graduate hours per semester during the scholarship period.
  • Must have completed 6 credit hours as a regular student in the MPA program.
  • Must submit one letter of support from a regular Public Administration Faculty member.

The Arthur A. Blumenfeld Endowed Lecture Series honors the life and work of Art Blumenfeld, former national president of the Government Finance Officers Association and former Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Albuquerque.

Art was dedicated to furthering best practices in public finance and one of the missions of the Blumenfeld Lecture Series is to facilitate excellence in public administration and finance.

The Arthur A. Blumenfeld Endowed Lecture Series is conducted through the University of New Mexico Foundation and is overseen by the School of Public Administration.

This endowment was established in 1980 to honor the late U.S. Senator Carl Hatch. Carl Atwood Hatch was a Democratic Party politician from New Mexico who represented New Mexico in the United States Senate from 1933 until 1949 and was later appointed by President Harry S. Truman to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico from 1949 until his death in 1963. 

Much like a Regents Professorship, this fund awards a professorship to a current faculty member for up to a three-year term. The award amount may be used by the recipient as a salary supplement or for support of research and scholarship, or a combination thereof.

Since 1995, the Julius Rezler Foundation in Budapest, Hungary has cooperated with the School of Public Administration and Anderson School of Management to support young Hungarians to study alternative dispute resolution for a semester at UNM. To date, approximately thirty-five Hungarians have been certified as mediators, conducted research as Visiting Research Scholars, and returned to Hungary to practice as mediators and arbitrators. In addition, UNM faculty have participated in Hungarian exchange programs with Hungarian colleagues.

This endowment was established in 2007 to support or assist in supporting distinguished professor(s) in the School of Public Administration, based on merit, as determined by the UNM Provost or his/her designee. The recipient must be a full-time employee of the UNM and have demonstrated merit in public administration and/or public administration of science policy.

Dr. Rosenthal had a long and distinguished career in public service in government and in academia. He was a regional director with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and was the director of the Program for Advanced Study in Public Science Policy and Administration at UNM, which eventually matured into the School of Public Administration, which he directed until his retirement in 1980. Dr. Rosenthal passed away on January 17, 2004.

The Sandra B. Weeke Scholarship Fund was established by her family to commemorate the life and work of UNM School of Public Administration Master of Public Administration (MPA) alumna, Sandra B. Weeke. To be eligible for the Weeke scholarship, applicants must be full or part-time MPA students at UNM SPA. Nontraditional students and single parents are the preferred recipients; however, an applicant’s gender will not be considered a factor in the selection process. The annual award ($400-1000) is to be presented at the School of Public Administration Convocation ceremony each May.

Submit an Essay

To be considered, a student must submit an essay (500-word limit; single-spaced; 12 pt. font) answering one of the following questions:

  • Single parents face challenges that other students do not face. What significant obstacles have you overcome as a single parent to achieve your educational goals and how do you fit them into your life and career and any special circumstances for achieving them?
  • Responsibility for the welfare of others present both burdens and benefits. How does caring for others prepare one for the challenges of being a graduate student and what are the advantages in your life or other of attending graduate school while doing so?
